crackle...crackle...Well, the slugfest continues. Scott Cochran and I met over at The Bat's Belfry (Guy Falsetti's humble abode) for over 10 hours yesterday to continue our CG. We just completed Turn 1 of the 20 PM date. It hurts to be me (the Japanese)!
In the 20 AM date the Marines suffered 415 CVP. Only 390 more and I win. I did not total up my losses, but I had 60 pieces in my reserve pool, 110 squad equivalents on map, and an assortment of guns, leaders and SW's remaining at the end of the 20 AM scenario. The Marine perimeter is around the base of the pier and includes about 20 beach hexes and 18 hinterland hexes. He had 1 1/2 squad on the beak. He brought in all the integral formations of his initial BLTs plus his two Sherman groups and 1 Lgt Tank group. He has about 6 mobile shermans and a bunch of rifle and eng squads retained. He had 3 immobile Shermans and 2 immobile lgt tanks in the water. He has 10 LVT retained.
My set up for the 20 PM date was with mostly dummies in front with a few squads to keep him honest. My HIP units were mostly positioned to be used on Turns 2 through 4. I set up to make him slowly chew through me on each flank of his beach head with fire bases to hit him in the flank as he reduces these positions. I have all of my big guns remaining and so his OBA is almost useless (I think his draw piles are something like 2B, 4R). He just set up bunches of death stars with - leaders and assault elements to clean up any remaining units. I will slowly withdraw as he pushes forward, attempting to retain concealment whenever possible.
On turn 1 he entered dozers at each beach, 1/2 tracks at red 1 and a few LVT's at Red 2 and 3. This is interesting as I expected him to enter the follow on battalion. His prep was relatively ineffective due to my concealment/dummies. Since he has no real presence on the Red 1 beaches his forces entering on Red 1 are like ducks in a pond. He had 2 immobilized Lgt tanks which were eliminated and one of the 1/2 tracks is down. I would expect that none of the Red 1 force will make it to the beach (he is heading for the Red 2 Beach area). His forces moved forward a couple hinterland hexes to each flank. One of his LVT's went down to a boat mine. In my turn I prep fired only a few units and put some smoke on some of his death stars. I have my mortars positioned to do this from the flanks. His defensive fire was punishing. He crushed my guys he could get any fire onto. I will have to concede more ground faster than I was hoping to if I want to have any guys left at the end of the date. After turn one I would guess I inflicted 26 CVP so far this date with a loss of about 18 by me. Over...
